We dramatically downsized when we moved. We went from a 2800 square foot house with a basement down to a 1400 square foot house with no basement. It was partly strategic in my quest to minimize and declutter. It has helped on both of those fronts tremendously. At the same time, as I’ve decluttered and found room for what is important, it has forced a lot of organization of the remaining essentials. With 5 people living in 1400 square feet, organization has become key in maintaining our sanity. Most importantly, my sanity!
Now that our 3 kiddos are in school full time, backpacks, coats and all have become a part of our every day life. We originally had them hanging in a closet, but we also have a 2 shelf metal rack in there where we store pantry items. It was quickly becoming cramped and cluttered and my desk was filling with paperwork daily. I needed to rethink this.
We do have a 2.5 car garage now, which we didn’t have before, so there is room out there that is being underutilized. So over the past few weeks, I’ve been dreaming up a new backback wall in the garage to organize ourselves better and give the kids more room, rather than a cramped closet. I had a few items already that I knew I’d want to incorporate, like a fabulous, black, chippy, vintage hook they were already hanging their backpacks on, and a vintage chair, but what else can I add? I knew I didn’t want it to look contrived. I want it to look gathered over time.
Aren’t they beautiful? And simple? And practical?
This was my initial sketch after I found an amazing antique wood box at a local antique store. I bought it to serve as storage, and as a spot to sit to put on shoes, or roller blades, or whatever.
I bought this 2 x 5 indoor/outdoor rug from Overstock.com for underneath it all and I can’t wait for it to arrive:
I’m currently working on the space, and it’s coming together nicely. I’m also ordering a canvas-wrapped print of our 3 kiddos to go in the center of it all, because, after all, they are. So it may be next week before I show you the finished space. But I am loving it so far and I think you will too!
