You guys! I can’t believe how cute these Robins Eggs wooden place card holders turned out to be:
And they were so easy to create!
After the kids eggs were finished yesterday (as detailed in my Wooden Eggs blog post of March 22), since I had another set of the wooden eggs, I decided to make an adult version of the place card holders for Easter. No sense letting the kids have all of the fun, right?
Since I wanted a more unified look for the adult table, I decided to mimic a Robins Egg for all of the eggs using the leftover paint I had already prepared for the kids to use in the previous post.
Here is what I mixed to get the perfect Robins Egg Blue using Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint:
I began with a base of the Eulalie’s Sky (1 TBSP premixed paint), then I added all of the remaining Layla’s Mint (1 TBSP premixed paint). I then added a tiny amount of the leftover French Enamel (approx 1/2 tsp premixed paint) because I wanted a deeper blue, but I didn’t want it to go too dark blue. I gave it a good stir and then softened the color by adding about 2/3 of the remaining Linen (approx 1/2 tsp premixed paint) from yesterday’s project.
Following two coats of paint, just as I did in my post from yesterday, I let the eggs dry completely then again gave them a light sanding with 22o grit (very fine) sandpaper. Once that was complete, I mixed up about 1/2 teaspoon of Curio to splatter with my paint brush on the painted wooden eggs to create the natural brown flecks as found on a real Robins Egg.
I dipped my paint brush into the Curio, drained the excess paint on the side of the cup and even blotted the brush on a paper towel so I had very little paint on my brush. I only wanted very tiny drops coming off of the brush.
I just kept going until I was satisfied with the look and I am so happy with how they turned out.
*Note: I saved the plastic case the eggs came in as storage of the completed eggs for use for years to come.
I also wanted to mention that the slice in the top of the eggs created for the place card to sit was done at a 15 degree angle with a chop saw, and removed from the bottom of the egg so it could sit upright was about an 1/4 of an inch (roughly the width of the saw blade x 2).
I am really happy with how easy it was to transform plain wooden eggs with Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint. The kids are excited to bring their eggs out again this coming weekend, and I’m looking forward to setting the table with all of our special eggs. I hope you’ve been inspired as well, and we wish you a very Happy Easter holiday, from our family to yours!
