As you’ve gathered by now, our mission is to keep as many reusable items from going to the trash as possible. We try to find a way to use any and everything because we believe where there is a will, there is a way.
Our favorite thing to save, as you know, is unwanted furniture. We generally go for the “worst case scenario” pieces of furniture. We go for the severely abused or neglected pieces because we know that together we have the resources and know-how to be able to repair whatever could be wrong with it (missing veneer, missed drawer tracks, layers of paint, mold, whatever). So when our picker texted me a photo of this dresser and asked if he thought we could save it, my response was “that doesn’t even remotely intimidate me!”
He found it at an estate sale tucked away in the corner of a garage with 3 layers of paint on the top, a finish that was barely hanging on, broken casters and a bottom drawer that wouldn’t open. No sweat!
The first thing we did was give it a good sanding and a good cleaning with TSP (trisodium phosphate). We wanted to get off as much of the loose finish as possible and clean it well before anything else. We then used Citristrip to get the layers of paint off the top and a new drawer base was built for the broken bottom drawer. At this point, I still was unsure of what I wanted it to look like in the end. I knew I wanted to use it in our son’s bedroom as part of his Bedroom Makeover that is still in progress, but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to paint the entire piece, refinish the top and paint the base, or paint the base and refinish the drawer fronts.
I wanted to see how the drawer fronts looked stripped down before I made my final decision and once the hubby stripped the old finish off of the drawer fronts, I immediately knew that keeping them “as is” was the way to go. I mean just look at that grain and texture:
That beautiful wood grain was hidden underneath all of that dark brown varnish!
So rather than sanding them down with a power sander, I gave them a light sanding with a 220 grit sanding sponge by hand until they were super smooth and then applied 2 coats of all natural Hemp Oil.
We put the original key hole covers back on and replaced the outdated drawer pulls with nautical rope for a more rustic feel.
To complete the dresser and to keep in neutral to last through the years, we painted the frame in Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Ironstone (pure white) and sealed it with White Wax & Furniture Wax.
We love the end result, don’t you?
