I love our main bathroom. I call it our “spa” bathroom because of its amazing jacuzzi tub. Unfortunately, we don’t use it enough, but when we do, it’s pure bliss I tell ya’!
This is what it looked like right after I moved in 4 years ago:
The previous owners built the bathroom. Now there is certainly nothing wrong with it, but why would you install brown tiles and a brown vanity countertop and then paint the walls baby blue? There’s nothing wrong with it, but it puzzled me. So I painted it. Guess what color? How’d you know? Ding, ding, ding, ding. You are correct! Brown. And yes, I am just now realizing that there are two scales on the floor. We are not obsessed with our weight, it was simply the joining together of two homes.
This was the “after”:
It was certainly fine for a while, but it was time to add some more elements to it and polish it off.
I wanted a shelf and my mom, yes my mom, wanted more hooks to hang clothes and towels on. I already had one hook which you can see pictured above to the right of the shower, but she requested more. So when she was visiting a while back she ran some errands and brought back . . . are you ready for this . . . an over-the-door hook! Gasp! I know! Now there is certainly a lot of utility in an over-the-door hook and I’m not knocking anyone who uses one, but I knew I could do better than that.
So what do you think?
It’s a similar piece of molding to the one I used at the last sale with the B&B’s Nest decal on it. I had another one just like it and I thought “I’ll paint it, put hooks on it and sell it at the sale.” Then I thought, “Wait a minute. We could use something just like that.” So that’s exactly what I did. I sanded it, primed it, spray painted it Heirloom White and installed the hooks. So much better than an over-the-door hook, don’t ya’ think?
And that little cabinet by the toilet that so discreetly houses our extra toilet paper and room spray also got a mini-makeover:
It was time to change out the silver knob for a glass one and add a tassel. Tassels are a quick way to dress up just about anything.
And then there’s the shelf I’d been wanting. I’d been searching for the perfect one for a couple of years. I found this little guy at a flea market for $8 a couple of months ago.
It has great curves and big shelves. It’s perfect. It didn’t have a back on it when I bought it, but the hubby fixed that right up.
I spray painted it with one coat of primer in white, then spray painted the edges with primer in black because when I distressed it, I didn’t want the old blue paint to show through.
Then I spray painted it with two coats of Heirloom White to match the new hook I made for the wall.
Then I distressed it and put on a light coat of Annie Sloan’s Dark Wax to give it an aged, worn look.
It’s exactly what I wanted. Now my grandmother’s antique gold drinking cup has its very own spot where it can be treasured for all time.
I even changed out my Zen buddha man in the window. Even though he never really matched the bathroom, he was a nice reminder to slow down and take it easy. I picked up this great little tote from Ann at the barn sale, filled it with lavender, and think the decal provides the same sort of reminder that the little buddha man did:
The cold, harsh shower doors were also softened up with an ivory shower curtain and a tassle tie back:
Our spa bathroom is even more inviting now than it was before. I’m happy with all of the little makeovers!
