Our Christmas Mantel 2012

I’m so excited to show you our Christmas Mantel this year.
Isn’t it festive?
Yes, you are seeing it correctly.  Those are miniature twinkle lights poking through the wood.

I purchased the truck from my friend Pamm at Fresh Eggs Antiques.  I told her I was looking for an antique metal truck and she said she had one at her booth, so I went and bought it right away.
It was exactly what I had in mind!

I made the “trees” from Styrofoam cones that I covered with strips of green burlap.
I then hot glued a silver jingle bell to the top of each tree as a star.

I dry-brushed the wood in ASCP Pure White because I wanted
more of a white-washed look than a solid, painted look on the wood.

It took me two nights to get the writing “just right”.  I wrote it all freehand except for the word “are”.
That’s the only word that was stenciled.  I wrote the words in pencil first (and erased and rewrote and sanded and rewrote and erased and rewrote it again) until I got it all exactly how, and where, I wanted it.
Then I went over it all very carefully with a Sharpie Paint Pen in red.

And da da da da . . . here is an unedited photo of what it looks like at night all lit up.  We absolutely love it!

Next week I’ll show you how we put the light board together.  Stay tuned . . . . but I will tell you this: it’s not pallet wood.  It’s actually boards from a futon frame we trash picked!  I heart repurposing!

Merry Christmas!

Thank you for reading!

XOXO
Laura
