Nursery Updates with Sources & a Ballard Designs Knockoff

When I initially decorated the nursery we didn’t know what we were having so I went neutral, but playful, with a red and yellow nursery.
Here is the room today:

Yes, the dark wood crib is missing so it really looks bare, but it’s currently being used by our youngest in another room.  It’ll make its way back in here soon enough.

I painted the table midnight blue and I even re-dyed the chair slipcover from yellow to red (the white chair in the first photo above is in another room now).  I had purchased a new chair for this room and dyed the ready-made slipcover in bright yellow.  I re-dyed it first with 3 packages of Rit Dye in “Scarlet”.
I tossed it in the room and thought it was too bright of a red.  So I went back and bought 1 package of Rit Dye in “Wine” and dyed it again in the washing machine.  It darkened the slipcover just enough to make it the perfect color red.
I talked about the wood nursery sign above the window and how I made it in my post from yesterday.
I also changed out a few of the accessories on the shelves.  I bought the vintage wooden bowling pins from my friend, Jan, at Gracie’s Cottage at the Elkhorn Flea Market last month.  They were on my shopping list and she just happened to have them.  Score!  I also added one of the hubby’s old baseballs to the shelf.
On another shelf, I added two more of the bowling pins and a stuffed football.

The hubby played football in college so, you know, it’s only fitting.

New picture frames waiting for photos:
A couple of teddy bears and new toys:
And a wooden fire truck:

I even switched out the yellow knobs on the closet doors to red ones from Anthropologie:

And I absolutely love, love, love the new rug in the room.  It’s the Dark Blue Floor Cut Rug from The Land of Nod.  It’s 100% cotton and made with recycled denim.  It’s perfect for this room and hopefully it’ll take him through a few years.
I also decided to take down the “Keep Calm” sign from above the dresser.  It’s now in the playroom and looks great in there.
I replaced it with a burlap cork board that I made with inspiration from Ballard Designs.
Ballard Designs Burlap Message Board
I bought a 17″ x 23″ corkboard ($8.99) from Hobby Lobby and 2 packages of upholstery tacks ($1.99 each) and I already had burlap at home in my fabric stash.
I simply wrapped the corkboard in burlap and used a staple gun to attach the burlap to the back of it.

I then hammered in the upholstery tacks around the frame.

Now we have a spot to pin up photos, cards and other what-nots.
There was certainly nothing wrong with the yellow and red nursery, but since we found out the sex of this babe, I decided to make some changes that would last for a few years.  I love the red and navy blue.  I love the American Flag pillow.  I’m happy with the updates!
Now when the little man will arrive?  Time will tell.  But at least we’re ready!
P.S. Sorry for the unfunny post today but I am not feeling the greatest this week.  We’re almost there.  Tick tock, tick tock.
