Guest Post

Hi everyone!  I’m Laura from over at B & B’s Nest and I’m giving away these beautiful starfish frames AND a $40 Pottery Barn gift card to one lucky winner.  How fun!

I guess it would be polite to start by telling you a little bit about myself.  B & B’s Nest was born out of a love for all things vintage and antique, and my passion for interior design.  I blog about what I love and what’s going on in our nest.  Period.  What I enjoy most is finding an abandoned vintage treasure, whether it’s a small item or a large furniture piece, and giving it a new life.  I have been refinishing furniture for a long time.  And redecorating?  Forget it.  I change my mind on paint colors and accessories as often as Charlie Sheen says “winning”.  But I had no idea anyone would be interested in what I was doing in our little world until I started searching the internet for inspirational photos of spaces I love.  Unbeknownst to me, there are thousands of blogs written by women, just like me, who have a passion for decorating, DIY projects and crafts.  What?  Why didn’t someone tell me?  I would have been doing this a LONG time ago.  It just so happens that we’re also in the midst of redoing our kitchen, dining room, living room, office and soon-to-be playroom, so now I share all of our disasters and triumphs with you.

Not only that, but I recently came across a gorgeous hutch on a little website called “Craigslist”.  Ever heard of it?  Yeah, I thought so (*smile*).  Anywho, I sent the seller an email asking if they were firm on their price and it sparked an exchange of emails that eventually led to B & B’s Nest taking part in its first ever professional sale.  You can read more about the announcement of our participation in the sale here and how it all turned out here.  It was an incredible experience and I wouldn’t trade all of the blood, sweat, tears and countless hours that went into it for the world!  I even reupholstered a chair for the very first time.  Front, back and the seat!  See:

Yeah.  I did.  And you could do it too!

Some of my furniture projects have recently been featured on Better After, Not Just a Housewife, The Besties, Beneath My Heart and Under the Table and Dreaming.

I even orchestrated an estate sale (think Cash & Cari) for a client in June and just finished setting up at a flea market this past weekend.  I even opened an Etsy shop and put B & B’s Nest on Facebook.  Did I mention I’ve only been online since March 23rd!  It’s definitely been an exciting and whirlwind couple of months.

My point in telling you all of this is to encourage you.  I want to encourage you to do that “thing” you’ve been meaning to do, or wanting to do, but have been putting off.  Do that project, learn how to (fill in the blank), paint that wall, shop that store, create that you-know-what.  Whatever it is, if I can do this, you can too!  In the famous words of Erma Bombeck:  “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say ‘I used everything you gave me!’”.

A BIG thank you to Linda for letting me chat with you today!  It’s been my absolute pleasure to “meet” all of you and I hope our paths cross again real soon.

I wish you a very happy day!

Day Two

So let’s continue from Day One of the sale, shall we?

But before I do that I wanted to let you know that B & B’s Nest is now on Facebook!  Please be sure to check it out and “Like” B & B’s Nest as soon as you get the chance.  Furniture pieces that I have for sale will regularly be posted on there, so be sure to check back often!

Okay, so back to the sale . . . I ended up transforming the burgundy sideboard/buffet into a beautiful Old White Chalk Paint sideboard:

I painted it, distressed and waxed it all while hanging out on Friday afternoon during a lull in the action.  What can I say?  I have a lot of non-directed unused energy to burn.  I figured if it was painted a neutral color more people would love it.  And I was right.  It sold within the first hour on Saturday morning.

It inspired me to think that when the sale comes around in the Fall that I should host a demonstration/tutorial on how to paint, distress and wax your own piece of furniture.  Share with people what works and what doesn’t, and answer questions.  I think it would be a great addition to the sale!

Saturday morning things needed to be rearranged, so this is what it looked like at the start of another gorgeous day:

I decided to write on the chalkboards so people could better envision how to use them, but they still didn’t sell.  Weird.  They’re super useful.  Only one out of four of them sold.  Oh well.  They’ll be available in the Etsy shop before the end of the week.

And check out my custom B & B’s Nest decal created by Leen the Graphics Queen.  I told her the dimensions of the architectural salvage molding I had and about how big I wanted it to be and the overall look I was going for.  Didn’t she do a fantastic job?  Please check out her site.  She creates some beautiful, and useful, decals.

I love that little black hutch.  I bought it at a flea market a couple of weeks ago.  It was red:
I spray painted it with one coat of black primer, then made a cute little curtain for the bottom with French toile, a tension rod and my glue gun (I really do need to learn how to sew, don’t I?):
It was perfect because it housed all of my extra platters, signs and chalkboards along with all of my pens, tags, business cards and what-nots.  It worked out great!

Here is Macy, the owner’s dog, hanging out in my shady area late in the day

By the end of day two, all of my furniture had sold except the two tier side table (which has since been sold), the shabby white coffee table, the Baroque chair and the two architectural salvage columns.  I decided since my space was so sparse, that I should bring something of Ann’s over to my booth that wasn’t selling in her barn.  So I grabbed this gorgeous buffet I had been eye-ing on her Facebook page long before the weekend ever arrived:

Isn’t it scrumptious?  It’s perfectly chippy and I love that it doesn’t have any doors on the bottom.  And look at those drawer pulls and key holes!  Well, needless to say, it came home with me.  It was a win-win for both Ann and I because she wanted my two columns and I wanted her buffet.  It just worked!

A beautiful girl drove over an hour and a half on Saturday afternoon to purchase the chippy, shabby white desk.  I told her the tragic story of when I moved it on Friday and showed her the crack, but she loved it, so she bought it.  I hope if you’re reading this, Charlotte, that it’s serving you well.  It’s one of my favorite pieces so far.
In fact, I really hope everyone that purchased something from me during the sale loves what they bought.  That’s why I’m doing this.  I love to see people smile and go home with a cherished item that I made for them.  That’s what this is all about and I’m loving what I’m doing.
So I packed up all of the leftover little items and boxes into the car (well, I should say that I stuffed the car.  The chandelier was poking my side the entire way) and drove home on Saturday.  I was exhausted, sore and sunburned but really super happy.  I showed up at home to the cutest little family on the planet, and this is what they made for me while I was gone:

I am a lucky girl!

A big thank you to Ann for hosting it and inviting me, a thank you to everyone that I met at the sale, all of my readers and anyone that had a hand in helping me.  I could not have done it without you!

B & B’s Nest will now officially be off the radar until Monday, June 13th.  It’s time to take a few days off, regroup and come back refreshed with some great new stuff to tell you about!!  See you on Monday!
